Carly Rae Jepsen, Ed Sheeran, & More Talk Donald Trump: ‘It’s America, Anything Kind Of Goes’

Politics is not usually a question one asks about at awards shows, but whenDonald Trump is running for President of the United States most people have an opinion. It should be noted that Toronto’s infamous former Mayor Rob Ford hasendorsed him, for whatever that’s worth.

Billboard asked a range of artists and actors — American, Canadian; pop, rap, rock — on the red carpet what they think of The Donald’s bid for the Oval Office. OnlyAdam Lambert, actress/singer Hailee Steinfeld, and actor Keith Stanfield gave no comment. Lambert laughed, though.

Carly Rae Jepsen said, “To be honest, this is the first time I’ve heard of it,” andLIGHTS, who also didn’t know, made her decision on the spot:  “Oh my God. Really?  Wow. I don’t think it’s gonna happen,” she laughed.

A joke seems to be the theme.

Ed Sheeran told Billboard, “I saw the quotes and the two-minute video and it was very entertaining.”

Donald Trump Calls Neil Young a ‘Total Hypocrite’

The Sheepdogs singer Ewan Currie cut right to the chase.  “I’m in favor of any kind of unintentional comedy for politicians. Rob Ford gave us a lot of laughs over the years and anytime Donald Trump is in the spotlight to be made a boob of, it’s a good thing.”

And then there are those who had similar things to say about the opportunities in America.

Kardinal Offishall, who had a top 5 Billboard Hot 100 hit in 2008 with “Dangerous (ft. Akon)” and is finalizing a new US deal, told Billboard, “Honestly, Ronald Reagan was president and he was a western movie star so anything is possible. Would I vote for him? Absolutely not. But anything is possible in America. America is a place where the best and the absolute worst can happen.”

Latin Noise: Latin Voices Silent Against Donald Trump’s Hateful Remarks

Shawn Hook, a Canadian who lived in Los Angeles and has a gold-selling Canadian single with “Sound Of Your Heart” and U.S. deal with Republic, laughed at the question. “I didn’t know it was for real at first. I knew people were talking about it. But when he actually announced that it’s official, I’m like, ‘It’s America, anything kind of goes.’ More power to him.”

Sarah Blackwood from Canada’s Walk Off The Earth echoes Hook’s and Kardi’s sentiments. She also first laughed at the question. “You know what, crazy things happen in this world. And crazier things have happened, so we’ll see what happens.”

Donald Trump Announces Presidential Bid to Deliciously Ironic Song Choice

Maze Runner/Shadowhunters actress and singer Katherine McNamara didn’t give it any thought.  “I’m not much into politics, but if that floats his boat.”

Fun. frontman Nate Ruess seems to have mixed feelings, working it through as he speaks. “What do I think about that? I guess if you’ve got enough money to just do it. I feel like he runs every year or something like that. Good for him. He’s gonna lose so that money could probably go to charity or something.”

Drake‘s best bud, rapper P Reign, who wasn’t allowed into the US for 12 years due to a weapons charge and is now free and clear and has signed with Sony out of New York, said,  “Ah, man, I never like to answer political questions, but is there anything he can’t do? I mean, I can’t vote anyway so I’m not even in that category of who should be president, but hats off to him.”
